Lightning / NHL news

The first player to have his number retired by the New York Rangers passed away on Sunday. Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert played in 1065 NHL games (all for New York) and recorded 1021 points (406 goals, 615 assists). He was part of the famed “Goal a Game” (GAG) line with Vic Hadfield and Jean Ratelle in the late 1960s and early 1970s that powered the Rangers offense. Gilbert was 80 years-old. Jack Eichel has most likely played his last game for the Buffalo Sabres. At some point he is likely to be traded.  Where he does end up, it’s likely he won’t suit up for the first game of the season. Part of the rift between the player and the organization is due to his neck injury and the Sabres reluctance to let him try a new type of surgery to fix it. Sources report that he hasn’t had any procedure done and likely won’t be medically cleared before the season begins. [Waiting game continues for Eichel]

Technically, we’re still in the middle of the 2021 NHL Free Agency period. That doesn’t mean it’s not too early to start speculating about the 2022 free agents! As this post only focuses on forwards under 30 Ondrej Palat and Patrick Maroon did not make this list, but there are still some intriguing names on it. [Previewing the 2022 NHL UFA class]
