Lightning Round: lots of almost trades

Nearly There with an Arrow

Over the weekend, a big trade between the Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues was reported and neared completion. Unfortunately for us fans looking for something to talk about, the deal fell apart when a player refused to waive their no-trade clause. Many believe that player to be Torey Krug. It’s well within his right to stay where he is, though he wasn’t expected to stay in Philly long as a second rumored trade that was going to forward him to New Jersey was also leaked.

None of it happened, and both Doug Armstrong and Danny Briere look to be back at the drawing board. The deal might still go forward in a much more simplified form, with Kevin Hayes finally getting out of Philly. Five of the Blues defenders have no-trade clauses.

Hot potato DeAngelo might be dropped back on Carolina’s doorstep after being traded from the team not long ago. That trade wasn’t expected until after the Hayes deal but with that on hold, so is this.

The Flyers are having open season on many defenders as the Maple Leafs were rumored to be acquiring Travis Sanheim. Well, either him or Noah Hanifin.

Meanwhile, it looks like Pierre-Luc Dubois is heading to the LA Kings. The Kings were reported to be working on a contract extension with Dubois based on reports Sunday afternoon. So, unless those contract talks fall apart, he’ll be a King this week.

On some deals that actually got done, the Vegas Golden Knights rewarded their golden goaltender, Adin Hill, with a two-year contract worth a shade under $5 million each. The 27-year-old pending UFA made an estimated $6 million in his career, according to Cap Friendly. He’s going to almost triple that with this contract.

Also signed, former Lightning prospect Connor Ingram to a three-year deal at a shade under $2 million in Arizona. He’s going to be the starter as their two goalie prospects battle for the backup job. We’ll see if either actually turn into much. The team needs to get much better to help the goalies out, too.

And last but not least, a draft-eligible goalie who learned how to use his size from Andrei Vasilevskiy’s game.

Preview of the Week:

  • A reminder that tonight is the NHL Awards in Nashville.
  • Wednesday night and Thursday all day is the NHL Draft.
  • Saturday is the start of Free Agency.
