Quick Strikes: Andrei Vasilevskiy talks about his summer in Russia

There have been some great goals scored by the Tampa Bay Lightning in their most recent era. Justin goes through and picks out his top 10. Do you have a top 10? We want to hear it! [Raw Charge]

This goal was the first scored in a Stanley Cup Final by a Lightning player since Ruslan Fedotenko’s game winner in Game Seven of the 2004 Stanley Cup Final. After a dump in by Steven Stamkos, Valtteri Filppula won the puck in the corner. He found Stralman at the point and he took a quick shot that fluttered towards the general vicinity of the net. It’s hard to tell in the video, but it looks like the shot was deflected by a Chicago Blackhawks stick.

The minors are a means to an end for me, but for others they are the league of their team. Fielding a roster at the whim of an NHL team seems like a hard row to hoe for me, but there are plenty who put up with the call ups and downs every season, because no matter who’s calling the shots, it’s their team, in their town, and there’s no other team that’s more important. They deserve coverage that would do them proud, and there are a few people who are dedicated to that cause.

Andrei Vasilevskiy is back in Tampa Bay as of a few weeks ago, and is prepping for the upcoming season. In this article, Vasy sits down with Bryan Burns of NHL.com and recounts what his summer was like in Russia. [NHL dot com]

This summer in Russia, of course we had the World Cup. I was going to go to a couple of games, but it was too busy for me. I don’t really like it when it’s that wild. I kind of stayed away from the games. Of course, I saw lot of fans on the street, cheering, singing. That was pretty cool. Lots of people came from around the world. People were singing on the subway, on the street, everywhere. It was a very friendly atmosphere and was actually really fun.

The Prospects

Former NCAA defenseman Tim Shoup has joined the Orlando Solar Bears for his first professional season. [Orlando Solar Bears]

Shoup, 23, joins the Solar Bears after completing his college career this past season at Dartmouth College, where the senior served as an alternate captain, and led the Big Green defensive corps with 10 points (5g-5a) and 12 penalty minutes. In 107 career games with Dartmouth, Shoup recorded 25 points (7g-18a) and 73 penalty minutes.

The Game

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andrej Sekera, 32, will be out for the season after tearing his achillies whilst training in Europe. He is now back in Edmonton, where he had the surgery to repair the tear. [NHL dot com]

“It’s a significant injury,” Edmonton general manager Peter Chiarelli said. ”We expected him to bounce back from his ACL and have him healthy for the year, so this is a tough blow,” Chiarelli said. “We’ll see how the recovery unfolds, but it’s incumbent on us to look for replacements whether they’re internal or external. We have the ability through long-term injury reserve to replace that salary and we’ll see how that goes. It’s definitely something that’s a big blow for us.”

This story was initially broken by local fans who saw Sekera at the airport in a wheelchair and cast. They reached out to the media on the story and team confirmation followed within a day. Impressive work.
