Quick Strikes: Lightning mount comeback in Detroit and first look at the Crunch’s Steve Yzerman bobblehead

The Lightning

The Lightning pulled of a huge comeback from down three goals in Detroit last night powered by four more points from Nikita Kucherov who now has 115 on the season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning started off slowly, getting down three goals to their adversaries the Detroit Red Wings. However, as the game went on, the team stuck to their game plan — which mostly comes down to out-shooting their opponent and hoping Nikita Kucherov gets a lot of those chances — and came away with a 5-4 victory on the road.

Nikita Kucherov scored twice, and assisted on two more for his eighth four-point night of the season. 115 points in total. He even assisted on Steven Stamkos’ 383rd career goal, which tied Vincent Lecavalier for first all-time in Tampa Bay Lightning history. It wasn’t a great night for Andrei Vasilevskiy, who was looking squirrelly for much of the night and never looked comfortable, but was still able to get the win by stopping 23 of 27 shots.

-Former Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman has been immortalized in bobblehead form by the Syracuse Crunch. Fans can pick up this special token at the Crunch’s game this Saturday.

Syracuse

-The Syracuse Crunch won their game at Laval this past Wednesday. Syracuse now needs 12 points to clinch a playoff spot.

The Syracuse Crunch went into Laval and did something they weren’t able to do in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday – hold onto a third period lead. Goals from three different rookies and thirty saves from Eddie Pasquale led to a 4-2 Crunch victory against the Rocket. With the win, the Crunch stay within a point of the Rochester Americans.

–The Crunch also recalled Matthew Spencer from Orlando and sent Oleg Sosunov to the Solar Bears. The move could be a sign that Dan Girardi will be out at least a little longer, which will keep Jan Rutta in Tampa. At this point in their careers, Spencer is a better option than Sosunov to play more minutes.

Spencer, 21, has played in 36 games with the Solar Bears this season earning two goals and 13 assists along with a plus-15 rating. He has also skated in nine games with the Crunch this season tallying one assist. Last season, the 6-foot-2, 193-pound blueliner appeared in 39 games with the Crunch recording five points (1g, 4a). He also played in 14 games with the Adirondack Thunder earning two goals and an assist.

-The Crunch is hosting a career fair on April 12th.

The Career Fair aims to connect local businesses with potential applicants along with giving organizations the opportunity to promote to Crunch fans. The Crunch are offering an Exhibitor Package for local businesses that would like to table at the Career Fair. The $200 package includes a table in Memorial Hall during the career fair, 10 tickets to the game and logo recognition on the scoreboard and ribbon lights. The deadline to purchase a package is Monday, April 1.

-Former Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop set the Stars’ consecutive shutout streak record last night.

After clean-sheeting teams three games in a row, Ben Bishop came into the game versus the Minnesota Wild tonight with more than 200 minutes played without allowing a goal, dating back to the second period against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday, March 3rd. Shutouts of the New York Rangers, Colorado Avalanche, and Buffalo Sabres, combined with an easy workload first period against the Wild, Bishop broke the franchise record for minutes without allowing a goal by a goaltender.

His shutout streak has now reached 224:20 — and going.

-The game between the Montreal Canadiens and the Carolina Hurricanes on March 24 is going to air on Rogers Hometown Hockey on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. This is believed to be the first NHL game called in the Plains Cree language.
