Quick Strikes for Friday, December 19

  • The official Lightning site recently posted a Bolts Today video of Mark Barberio and Tyler Johnson attending a sled hockey practice session. [Tampa Bay Lightning]
  • Our own David Baldwin is part of this sled hockey team, and commented that with Jay Feaster’s involvement in the program, he’s looking forward to the team’s future. David has previously written about his teammate Declan Farmer’s inclusion on the gold-winning Sochi team. [Raw Charge]
  • Travis Yost explained the correlation between good possession, Corsi%, and multi-shot shifts. In the East, Tampa ranked second only to Florida at generating offensive possessions that result in multiple shots, while also limiting the same types of shifts defensively. [TSN]
  • Eye on Hockey called Tampa’s signing of Anton Stralman one of the best free agent signings of the summer, and said that Tampa Bay should have “absolutely no” regrets. [Eyes on Hockey]
  • In non-mumpy health news, Johnson has succumbed to his first illness of the year, an intestinal ailment caught from none other than defenseman Radko Gudas. [Tampa Bay Times]
  • The Winnipeg Jets have lost D Mark Stuart until February. They are currently missing four of their top four D: Toby Enstrom, Zach Bogosian, Jacob Trouba, and Stuart. [Arctic Ice Hockey]
  • It would not be a December Quick Strikes post without something about either the mumps or the Oilers, so you can actually have both. Lighthouse Hockey’s Dan Saraceni wrote a satirical article about the Oilers’ potential trade options. [Lighthouse Hockey]
  • In related, sucky, news, the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL will cease hockey operations after this season because they were “unable to complete an affiliation agreement with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers.” [OKCbarons.com]
  • Kyla Jae wrote out her frustration after listening to media coverage of Shannon Szabados’ first game as goaltender for the Columbus Cottonmouths. [KJlane]
  • …And Megan of Let Me Learn From Where I Have Been reflected upon the institutionalized sexism of sports media after reading tweets from Marc Spector (Sportsnet) regarding two female politicians in the Alberta legislature. [LMLFWIB]
  • Completely off the subject of hockey – Yesterday there was a slew of news about Tampa. Today, there’s more. The St. Petersburg city council has denied the Tampa Bay Rays the freedom to explore potential stadium sites elsewhere in the Bay area. [Draysbay]

Your daily mumps report:

  • Mumps are no longer confined to just players, and are now hitting officials. [Scoutingtherefs.com]
  • Crosby says he let himself be interviewed with mumps-face because “That’s not what I looked like when I went out onto the ice.” [Pittsburgh Penguins]
  • The mumps have spread to the AHL, with Joey Crabb of the Hartford Wolf Pack undergoing tests for the disease. The Syracuse Crunch are scheduled to play them Friday. [Syracuse.com]
  • Wolf Pack head coach Ken Gernander has fallen ill too. [Puck Daddy]
  • Look. I’m not Claude Giroux mother, but wouldn’t you think twice about wiping your snot on an official in these mumptastic days? Broad Street Hockey caught Giroux in the act. [Broad Street Hockey]
