Quick Strikes for Sunday, January 4

  • In case you missed it, Kyle wrote that we kinda lost in Pittsburgh, again. Could it be “The Curse of CONSOL”? [Raw Charge]
  • Even Burns agreed that weird things happened in Pittsburgh. [Tampa Bay Lightning]
  • Joe Smith quoted head coach Jon Cooper as saying, “We all felt like [sick ref Leggo] after the first period.” [Tampa Bay Times]
  • The Ottawa Senators defeated the Bruins in OT last night. Please be all tired out, Sens! [Mass Live]
  • “We played the right way, we did things that we needed to do.” Sage advice. [Ottawa Senators]
  • Crunch D Slater Koekkoek talks about all the things, from hockey to totally random stuff. [Syracuse Crunch]
  • While the Bolts were busy avoiding the smelly areas of the Pittsburgh ice on Friday night, Andrei Vasilevskiy helped the Crunch win against the Albany Devils in a shootout on Friday. [Syracuse Crunch]
  • Then the Crunch turned around and won against the Binghamton Senators in overtime with two power play goals from Mike Blunden, breaking the team’s recent slump. Kristers Gudlevskis was in the net for this one. [The AHL]
  • CapGeek, which has served NHL fans, bloggers and media type persons with contract information on NHL players, has permanently ceased operations. Raw Charge wishes the best to Mathew Wuest. [CaGgeek]
  • Jaromir Jagr became the oldest player in NHL history to record a hat trick, passing Gordie Howe with the feat. (Sidenote: Did you know that Ondrej Palat had a poster of Jagr in his room while he was growing up?) [Yahoo Sports]
  • Guess who’s going to the All-Star game? That’s right, our awesomely chippy Sabres friend, Zemgus Girgensons. You might remember him from the 106 PIM game we had a few weeks ago. He’ll be joined by most of the Blackhawks. [Puck Daddy]
  • Claude Giroux got a skate to the leg, but I hear he wears Mithril socks. He did NOT play against the Devils, however. [Broad Street Hockey]
  • Speaking of the Flyers, they violated the sacred NHL commandment, Thou Shalt Not Do Official Hockey-Related Activities on Boxing Day. The Ducks, Devils, and Rangers held practice, but these were fine because they were “unofficial” and no coaches were present. Way to hold to the letter of the law, guys. [Sportsnet]
  • In the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championships, it’ll be Canada vs. Slovakia and Sweden vs. Russia.[Yahoo Hockey recap, Canada vs. Denmark] [CBC.ca recap, Sweden vs. Finland]
  • If you like gossip, apparently “Montreal is not a hockey town.” It failed to sell all the WJS tickets for US vs. Canada. [Montreal Gazette]
  • Also, there’s this:

The Canada-U.S. game did nothing to settle the issue of which player will be the top pick in June’s NHL entry draft. Boston University’s Jack Eichel was brutal on faceoffs, but appeared more involved than Canada’s Connor McDavid. Eichel picked up an assist, while McDavid was held off the scoresheet in the 5-3 Canada win. [Montreal Gazette]
