Quick Strikes: Pat Maroon joins the Lightning

The Bolts

As it was announced on Saturday evening, the Tampa Bay Lightning have signed free agent Pat Maroon to a one year deal worth $900,000. Last season, Maroon was a part of the Stanley Cup winning St. Louis Blues.

Given the price and length, it’s probably not the worst signing, but it certainly won’t help some prospects to make the team. [Raw Charge]

The moves follows the recent trade of Adam Erne to the Detroit Red Wings. Most fans and media speculated that trade was to make room for a younger forward like Carter Verhaeghe or Alex Volkov. But it now appears that Maroon will be taking the roster spot vacated by Erne.

It’s always possible that Maroon could lose out to the younger players in camp and his cap hit, which is almost entirely buriable in the AHL, makes that feasible. But the most likely scenario is that Maroon takes a regular spot in the bottom six delaying the arrival of younger players for another year.

Here’s the letter Maroon wrote to the Blues and Lightning fans yesterday.

Volkov has put together two very consistent and very similar AHL seasons in a row, at least if one looks at the scoresheet only. In 2017-18, he was 10th in this countdown. He played in 75 games for Syracuse, had 23 goals and 22 assists, for a total of 45 points. Although he took a little time to transition to the professional game in North America, he built up a solid first season. He ended 4th on the team in points and first in goals.
