The Lightning
The Tampa Bay Lightning played probably one of their best games of the season last night against the Nashville Predators, but small mistakes and not very confident play on the penalty kill led to an overtime loss. [Raw Charge]
This was a game that Tampa Bay shouldn’t have lost if we’re being honest. They outplayed Nashville at 5v5, and didn’t allow them to penetrate the slot all evening. That’s a sound gameplan, but poor special teams play will always doom teams in close games, and it did yet again for Tampa Bay this evening.
Jon Cooper thinks the team deserved more in this game but even with the loss, they are right where you want to be in the standings.

Curtis McElhinney played a decent game, but still blamed himself for allowing the goal in overtime.

The Prospects
The Syracuse Crunch played a wild game against the Rochester Americans. They scored six goals but still were defeated in the overtime. Gemel Smith had a solid game, scored two goals and added an assist on Ben Thomas’ goal. [Raw Charge]
Despite another “good week of practice,” the Crunch fell into some of their bad habits (turnovers) and paid for it with goals allowed. This may be a case of too much practice and not enough actual game action, but Syracuse needs to figure out their defensive issues quickly or they risk falling out of the race early in the season.
