Quick Strikes: The expansion Vegas Golden Knights await either the Lightning or the Capitals

The Game

The Vegas Golden Knights are headed to the Stanley Cup Final in the first year of their existence. The motley crew of NHL cast-offs awaits the winner of the Eastern Conference Final between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Washington Capitals. Vegas doesn’t have anyone on their roster that they acquired directly from Tampa but they do have former Lightning forward Jonathan Marchessault. The Caps have a more direct connection in the form of defender Nate Schmidt.

Ryan Reaves deflected a Luca Sbisa shot to score the game winning goal, which… honestly,…makes perfect sense given how this team’s season has gone.

Sweden won gold at the World Hockey Championship defeating Switzerland 3-2 in a shootout. Mika Zibanejad and Gustav Nyquist scored for the Swedes and the game ended when Anders Nilsson denied Nino Niederreiter to clinch the game. [Sportsnet]

USA claimed a bronze medal defeating Canada 4-1. The game was closer than the score line suggests. The US scored two empty net goals to stretch a 2-1 lead to 4-1 in the final minutes. Nick Bonino scored the game winner in the third period. [Sportsnet]

The Rangers appear close to hiring David Quinn as their next head coach.

Uber, yes that Uber, will fork over 100k to keep the Metro in DC open for an extra hour so that Caps fans can get home safely on public transportation. [Russian Machine Never Breaks]
