Lightning play one of their best games of the season and lose 4-3 in OT to Stars

Recap

The Lightning outshot the Stars 48-20 and lost 4-3 in overtime. No, that’s not a typo. Yes, they only scored three goals on 48 shots and allowed four on 18. I’m not sure it’s possible for the skaters to play a better game than they did tonight aside from their finishing. But once again, it wasn’t enough as Andrei Vasilevskiy posted an .800 save percentage.

Alex Radulov opened the scoring with a goal four minutes into the game. The Lightning responded with goals from Mikhail Sergachev and Alex Killorn to take a 2-1 lead before the end of the first period. All three goals to that point were scored on the power play.

The Lightning took a 3-1 lead in the second period on an Ondrej Palat goal. Dallas cut the lead in half before the intermission on a shot by Radek Faksa. Jason Dickinson tied the game on an absurdly soft goal that trickled through Vasilevskiy’s five hole late in the third period. Tyler Seguin won it on the rush in OT immediately following Tyler Johnson missing a wide open net at the other end.

StatCap

The Lightning dominated statistically just as they have for much of the season. But none of that matters if your goalie can’t make a save and you don’t finish your chances.

FeelingsCap

The Lightning didn’t do a good enough job of scoring when they had the opportunity tonight. But I’m not going to worry too much about that. They’ve been one of the best shooting teams in the league for years and I don’t expect that to change as long as they have Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, and Brayden Point.

But the goaltending, that’s a problem. Over and over this season, the Bolts have dominated play only to watch the puck end up in the net every time the other team gets in the offensive zone. Tonight was probably the most extreme example. You can’t outshoot a team 48-20 and lose 4-3. You just can’t. Vasilevskiy has to be better. Simple as that.
