Tampa Bay Lightning prospect report: Otto Somppi is consistently good

Otto Somppi had another six-point weekend. It’s not common, but he’s consistently on the score sheet for the Halifax Mooseheads. He missed the start of the season, but he’s more than made up for it with a 1.4PPG pace. He’s a dazzling player to watch, and Syracuse Crunch fans should be excited to see him next season.

The dynamic duo of Boris Katchouk and Taylor Raddysh were held to just one combined point as the Greyhounds lost two games in a row for the first time since October?

Ontario Hockey League

#12 – Christopher Paquette (F) – 0G, 2A, -1
Peterborough Petes – 18-23-2-3

Jan. 18th: vs Kingston Frontenacs
L 5-1 – No Points
Jan. 20th: vs Oshawa Generals
L 4-3 SO – 0G, 1A, +1
Jan. 21st: @ Ottawa 67’s
L 6-1 – 0G, 1A, -2

The Petes’ three losses have put the team at a disadvantage and out of the playoff race for the moment. Paquette adding two assists was nice but the entire team needed to contribute more.

#12 – Boris Katchouk (F) / #14 Taylor Raddysh (F)
1G, 0A, -3 / 0G, 0A, -3
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds – 37-5-2-1

Jan. 19th: @ Sarnia Sting
L 5-3 – 0G, 0A, -3 / 0G, 0A, -3
Jan. 20th: @ Flint Firebirds
L 4-2 – 1G, 0A / No Points

The Greyhounds’ seemingly never-ending 28 game point streak (27-0-0-1) ended with a loss to second-overall Sarnia and then a surprising loss to last-place Flint. The Katchouk/Raddysh pairing were shut down well by opposing teams.

#12 – Alexei Lipanov (F) – 1G, 1A, +1
Sudbury Wolves – 13-27-6-0

Jan. 18th: @ North Bay Battalion
L 5-3 – 1G, 0A, +1
Jan. 19th: vs Saginaw Spirit
W 4-2 – 0G, 0A, -1
Jan. 20th: vs North Bay Battalion
W 2-1 – 0G, 1A, +1

Lipanov is the Wolves’ leading scorer, and the Wolves won two games, but sadly they are essentially fighting with Flint for first overall in the draft.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League

#89 – Otto Somppi (F) – 3G, 3A, -2
Halifax Mooseheads – 30-11-5-1

Jan. 17th: vs Moncton Wildcats
L 4-3 OT – 1G, 1A
Jan. 19th: vs Cape Breton Screaming Eagles
W 5-4 OT – 2G, 2A, +1

Jan. 20th: @ Acadie-Bathrurst Titan
L 11-1 – 0G, 0A, -3

I’m not going to blame it all on the 11-1 blowout in Acadie-Bathurst, but the Mooseheads aren’t first overall anymore. Somppi though had another six point weekend, and that is amazing.

Western Hockey League

#21 – Brett Howden (F) / #76 – Oleg Susonov (D)
1G, 2A, +1 / 0G, 2A
Moose Jaw Warriors – 38-7-1-2

Jan. 19th: @ Regina Pats
W 5-3 – 0G, 1A, +1 / 0G, 0A, -1
Jan. 21st: @ Saskatoon Blades
W 5-3 – 1G, 1A / 0G, 2A, +1

The Warriors held onto first place with back-to-back 5-3 wins on the road.

#3 – Libor Hajek (D) – 0G, 2A, -1
Regina Pats – 24-20-5-0

Jan. 17th: @ Prince Albert Raiders
W 4-3 – 0G, 1A
Jan. 19th: vs Moose Jaw Warriors
L 5-3 – 0G, 0A, -1
Jan. 20th: @ Saskatoon Blades
L 4-3 OT – 0G, 1A

The Pats have a good gap over the non-playoff teams but they will need to play harder and win more to be respectable Memorial Cup hosts.

#25 – Cal Foote (D) – 2G, 2A, -1
Kelowna Rockets – 29-14-2-1

Jan. 17th: vs Lethbridge Hurricanes
W 4-3 OT – 1G, 0A, -1
Jan. 19th: @ Seattle Thunderbirds
L 7-2 – 0G, 1A, -4
Jan. 20th: vs Victoria Royals
W 8-4 – 1G, 1A, +4

The Rockets are one point off from first in the west, and showed they aren’t a team to be trifled with in their dominant win over the Royals. Ignore the loss to Seattle.

USHL

#19 – Cole Guttman (F)
Dubuque Fighting Saints

Guttman is on IR for the foreseeable future.

#14 – Nicklaus Perbix (D) –  0G, 2A, +1
Omaha Lancers – 19-10-2-0

Jan. 19th: vs Des Moines Buccaneers
L 3-0 – No Points
Jan. 20th: @ Des Moines Buccaneers
W 5-1 – 0G, 2A, +1

Perbix and the Lancers came back to avenge their shutout loss with force, knocking over the Buccaneers 5-1.

High School

#26 – Samuel Walker –  2G, 2A
Edina High School

Jan. 19th: vs Lakeville South
W 4-1 – No Points
Jan. 20th: @ Hill-Murray
W 7-1 – 2G, 2A

After an uncharacteristic pointless game Walker was back at it with four points in a 7-1 win.

NCAA

#33 – Kris Oldham (G)
U. Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks
Overall: 12-11-1 / Conference: 5-9-0

Jan. 19th: @ Denver
L 5-0 – Did Not Play
Jan. 20th: @ Denver
L 4-0 – Did Not Play

#20 – Ross Colton (F) – 1G, 0A, +1
U. Vermont Catamounts
Overall: 5-15-4 / Conference: 2-9-3

Jan. 19th: vs U-Mass Lowell
L 3-2 OT – No Points
Jan. 20th: vs U-Mass Lowell
W 6-3 – 1G, 0A, +1

Colton scored in a rare Catamounts win!

#18 – Ryan Lohin (F) – 1G, 0A, -3
U. Mass-Lowell River Hawks
Overall: 14-11-0 / Conference: 9-7-0

Jan. 19th: @ Vermont
W 3-2 OT – 0G, 0A, -2
Jan. 20th: @ Vermont
L 6-3 – 1G, 0A, -1

The River Hawks must hang their heads in shame over losing to Vermont.

#16 – Johnathan MacLeod (D) – 0G, 0A, -1
Boston U. Terriers
Overall: 11-11-2 / Conference: 9-7-2

Jan. 19th: @ Merrimack
W 4-3 – 0G, 0A, -1
Jan. 20th: vs Merrimack
W 3-1 – No Points

MacLeod is getting into more and more games, it seems like he’s earning the trust of the coaching staff back.

#20 – Ryan Zuhlsdorf (D)
U. Minnesota Golden Gophers
Overall: 15-12-1 / Conference: 6-9-1

Jan. 18th: @ Michigan State
W 5-4 – 0G, 0A, -3
Jan. 20th: vs Michigan State
W 2-1 – 0G, 1A, +2

A bad game then a good game on the blue line for Ryan last weekend, but both were wins so it doesn’t look so bad.
