We were all but certain that the Tampa Bay Lightning were done their trade deadline business when they signed depth defender Zach Bogosian yesterday and traded for Blake Coleman last week, but now it looks like the Lightning are adding another player to the forward group in Barclay Goodrow.
As of publishing, the full trade is unknown, though it has been reported by multiple media members that a first round draft pick is involved. The Lightning are currently at the 50 NHL contract max so there is at least one player signed to an NHL contract (could be an NHL roster player, AHL player, or a juniors player on an ELC) that will have to go back to San Jose in the trade. More analysis and details will be provided when we have an official announcement.
A Toronto native, Goodrow was signed by the San Jose Sharks as an undrafted free agent out of the OHL. He spent five seasons in the OHL, but only exceeded a point per game in his final season of 2013-14 when he served as Captain of the North Bay Battalion after their move from Brampton. He twice scored more than 30 goals for the Battalion and put up 14 goals and 24 points in 22 playoff games in 2013-14.
As a professional rookie, Goodrow played six games for the Worcester Sharks, but spent the majority of the season in the NHL posting four goals and 12 points in 50 games. His second and third seasons were a different story when he recorded just four assists over 17 games in the NHL and spent the rest of his time in the AHL where he scored 45 goals over two seasons.
Goodrow has been a regular in the line up for the Sharks since the 2017-18 season when he played 47 games with seven goals and 14 points. He played all 82 games for San Jose last season with seven goals and 17 points. Even though the Sharks have struggled this season, Goodrow has seen a rise in his point production with eight goals and 24 points in 62 games.
Goodrow has also seen his ice time climb dramatically this season playing 16:23 on average after averaging 10:57 TOI going into this season. He has also played an average of 2:27 short handed this year which is the most of any Sharks forward.
For the number fanatics out there, Goodrow initially wore #89 for the Sharks but then moved to #23. #23 is currently worn by Carter Verhaeghe. Cory Conacher owns #89 and wore that for four games at the beginning of the season. While I don’t expect that we’ll see Conacher in the NHL again this year, I have to imagine that his number will still be held for him. It appears those two numbers are the only numbers that Goodrow used in the AHL and the OHL so it looks like he may have to pick a new number.
