Yzerman named Team Canada executive director for 2014 Olympics
Tampa Bay Lightning executive vice president and general manger Steve Yzerman has been named executive director for Canada's men's ice hockey team for the 2014 Winter Olympics, taking place in Sochi, Russia. He served in the same position for Team Canada in 2010, the team that won the gold medal in Vancouver.
Yzerman will lead an executive staff that is expected to include Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland, Edmonton Oilers president Kevin Lowe, St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong and Hockey Canada staffers Bob Nicholson and Brad Pascall as well as Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli and Toronto Maple Leafs director of operations Dave Nonis.
At this time, the National Hockey League has not publicly decided if it will allow it's players to participate in the 2014 Olympic Games. The subject of Sochi is expected to be part of labor negotiations during the league's off season this summer.
