91 Days of Stamkos: Day 28, Cardboard All-Star Stamkos

The All-Star theme continues today on 91 Days of Stamkos. If you haven’t had the chance go back and read @waffleboardsave’s in-depth recap of Stamkos’ career at the slightly past mid-season classic.

Today’s post is a bit shorter and features one of the few hockey cards released showing Steven Stamkos in an all-star sweater, well one of the few affordable ones.

This is the 2015-16 O-Pee-Chee All-Star Glossy Set.

Found at a rate of 1 per every 8 packs, the All-Star Glossy set was comprised of 50 cards that showcased the players that participated in the 2014-15 in Columbus.  Along with Stamkos, Jonathan Drouin also has a card as he participated in the rookie skills, winning the fastest skater competition.

Not featured – Tyler Johnson.  Even though he was named to the All-Star game that year, Johnson withdrew from the competition due to a lower-body injury he had suffered prior to the event.

Stamkos was drafted 7th overall by Team Folgino (his pick is at the 25 minute mark) and was resplendent in a plum, three-piece suit. In the game itself, he picked up two goals and an assist as his team won, 17-12.

Honestly, it’s not the best card ever featuring Stamkos, or heck, even the best card of the set (that would be Ryan Johansen sitting on the hood of his MVP car), but it is one of the few licensed cards of Stamkos in a non-Lightning uniform. The back of the card posts his season stats and has a blurb in both English and French mentioning the two goals scored in the game.

Good luck to Victor Hedman and Nikita Kucherov in today’s game and hopefully there will be many, many more cards showing Stamkos in All-Star uniforms in the future.
