Brayden Point: Scoring first career NHL goal is a ‘relief’

Point was named first star of the game after the Bolts come from behind to beat the Devils, 4-1

Brayden Point, fresh off scoring his first NHL goal and being named the No. 1 star of Saturday’s game, seemed a bit bashful when discussing the historic night with Brian Englom postgame.

Point called it lucky. He called it a relief. He downplayed the fact that his shot was a deflection.

Well, it doesn’t really matter. A goal is a goal and no one cares how you scored it years from now.

In a night of milestones, Point, the 20-year-old rookie who impressed his way to the Bolts’ lineup out of training camp, had a night to remember.

With the Lightning up 2-0 in the third period and on the power play, he went to the front of the net after the face-off win... and the rest, they say, is history.

Point got the deflection that went top shelf, glove side on Cory Schneider.

This week, the Raw Charge staff recognized Point for stepping into the lineup with ease. It took a dozen games but it was worth the wait. Point said the last time he had gone this long without a goal was probably when he was 16 and with Moose Jaw.

Nikita Kucherov added another goal later in the period and the Lightning won 4-1.

No word yet if/when the Bolts will take a team trip to Arby’s since, you know, Point isn’t old enough to get into bars.
