Lightning Round: What’s the status of Tanner Jeannot?

After missing 12 games with an injury, Tanner Jeannot returned to action in the Tampa Bay Lightning’s most recent game. Unfortunately his return didn’t last long. The forward was on the ice for just 5:44 and didn’t take a shift in the third period against the Boston Bruins.

Watching his final shift of the night, which came with 1:41 left in the second period, nothing seemed amiss. He was skating okay and went to the bench on a line change with 49 seconds left. With a length of 52 seconds, it was the longest of the 8 shifts he took on the night.

Delving into the scoresheet a little further, it appears that his linemate, Mitchell Chaffee, was only on the ice for three shifts in the third period, and the 1:46 of ice time was the lowest he had in any of the three periods. Luke Glendening, their center, seemed to take his regular shifts. It is worth noting that the Lightning were shorthanded three times in the third period and neither Jeannot or Chaffee kills penalties. Jeannot, who has been a regular on the second power play unit, did not register any power play time during the Lightning’s three chances with the man advantage throughout the night.

There is a chance that Coach Cooper shortened his bench in a close game against a division rival and Jeannot is perfectly healthy. With the Lightning having Wednesday off, there was no update on his availability. That leaves us with the morning skate later today, and if that is optional, we have to wait all the way until warm-ups to see what his status is for the game.

Hopefully, he didn’t aggravate whatever injury he had or suffer a new one a la Mikhail Sergachev in his brief return to action. While he might be producing as much as some fans want, Jeannot is a vital part of the bottom-six and the Lightning will need him down the stretch.

Linus Ullmark fined for high-stick [NESN]

Don’t hit Mikey Eyssimont with a high-stick! After the Lightning forward collided with the Boston goaltender in the crease, Ullmark chopped his stick down and grazed Eyssimont’s helmet. For his action he received, let’s say it together, THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE FINE UNDER THE CBA. For the record, it was $5,000.

Crunch fall to Senators, 6-5 [Syracuse Crunch]

For whatever reason, the Syracuse Crunch just can’t beat the Belleville Senators this season. Their 6-5 loss on Wednesday night dropped their record to 0-2-1-1 against Ottawa’s AHL affiliate. Syracuse had a 3-2 lead after two periods thanks to goals from Jack Finley, Lucas Edmonds, and Cole Koepke. Belleville tied it early in the third period before Waltteri Merela untied it with his 9th goal of the season. Unfortunately the Senators scored the next three and Sean Day’s goal with one second left was a bit too little and too late for a comeback.

Alex Frye, Darik Angeli, and Jimmy Mazza scored in regulation while Frye and Jesse Jacques scored in the shootout as the Solar Bears picked up their 23rd win of the season.

Jonas Brothers talk Stadium Series [NHL.com]

Did you know there were Stadium Series games this weekend? Not one, but two of them, both of them at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey. On Saturday it will be the Flyers vs. the Devils while the Rangers battle the Islanders on Sunday (they couldn’t have the Sabres play the Devils and get all of the New York/New Jersey teams in on the action?). The Jonas Brothers are playing before one of the games, cool.

Sean Couturier named captain of the Flyers [Broad Street Hockey]

For the first time in the Tortorella regime, the Flyers have a captain. No one had worn the “C” in Philly since Claude Giroux was traded away in the 2021-22 season. Couturier, who is 31-years-old (wow, time flies) is one of the senior members of the team and a good choice to lead the team on the ice.

How will Gary Bettman resolve the Arizona Coyotes arena saga [PHNX]

Uncle Gary’s insistence on keeping the Coyotes in Arizona may be his defining legacy when it’s all said and done, which is something since he’s been running the league since the first George Bush was in office. During the All-Star Break, it seemed some sort of news from either the league or the franchise was immanent. Apparently, that’s not the case. Maybe they found land to build a new stadium on, maybe not. Maybe they will relocate, maybe they won’t.

Antitrust lawsuit goes after NHL, CHL [CBC]

A lawsuit was filed in New York that alleges the CHL violates antitrust laws because it restricts the ability of players to negotiate. The NHL was named as a co-conspirator in the filing as they claim that the leagues collude to “prevent its players from finding employment in minor professional leagues like the American Hockey League or the ECHL, while those circuits actively recruit under-20 players from Europe.”
