New faces join the Crunch to close out the season

Syracuse GM Julien BriseBois announced this afternoon that defensemen Dominik Masin, Matthew Spencer and forward Jonne Tammela have been inked to amateur tryout contracts.

With Thursday’s call up’s of Matt Taormina and Jonathan Drouin, Crunch fans will get an early glimpse at what the next few seasons may have in store.

Masin, 20, is a 6-foot-3 198 pound defenseman from the Czech Republic who suited up in 57 games with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL this year. In those 57 contests he scored eight goals to along with 32 helpers. He led all defensemen on the team with a plus/minus of +24.

A second round pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Masin is expected to make the jump to the AHL full time next season.

Spencer, 19, is a righty defenseman with size. At 6-foot-1 207 pounds, the Oakville Ontario native finished up what could possibly be his final season with Peterborough having scored 24 points (5G, 19A) in 60 total games.

A second round pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2015, Spencer would be eligible to suit up for the Crunch full time next season.

Tammela, 18, has skated in 37 games with Kalpa of the SM-liiga in FInland. In his time there he has notched just 5 goals and 8 assists.

At 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, the Espoo, Finland native fits the Yzerman mold perfectly. A quick pit stop in Syracuse will give him a sneak peek at the North American game before he comes here to play full time presumably in another one to two years.

The Crunch are back in action at the War Memorial arena Friday when they host the Albany Devils. A regulation loss would officially eliminate Syracuse from playoff contention.
