Quick Strikes for Wednesday, March 18

  • Steven Stamkos, Victor Hedman, Ben Bishop; three big reasons why the Lightning are ready for the playoffs. [Tampabay.com]
  • Should the Montreal Canadiens Brandon Purst face disciplinary action for his antics Monday, deliberately colliding with Ben Bishop? [The Hockey News]
  • Friday night, War Memorial in Syracuse becomes the Mos Isley Spaceport cantina! t’s Star Wars night! [OurSports Central]
  • At the GM meeting in Boca Raton yesterday, the general managers have approved a change to the league’s overtime system! After 4-on-4 play has ceased, 3-on-3 hockey will ensue in an attempt to put off the shootout. [TSN.ca]
  • …It still misses the problem created by overtime or the shootout – the loser point and teams being rewarded for a loss. [Raw Charge]
  • Out since February 2nd, New York Rangers goalkeeper Henrik Lundqvist has been cleared to return to practice with the Rangers. When that translates into the King starting again is still up in the air, but this should be a morale boost for an already high-flying Rangers team. [Blueshirt Banter]
  • As for the goalie that the Rags have depended on with Lundqvist out, Cam Talbot, the question of his value is being kicked around. Just what could New York get moving him in the off season? [Blueshirt Banter]
  • The Rangers are the top club in the NHL at the moment, but there are more than a few obstructions that challenge the Rags on a path toward Lord Stanley’s Cup. [NY Post]
  • Elsewhere, the goalie news is a little more grim — Ottawa Senators netminder Craig Anderson is shelved after aggravating his hand injury. The Sens have made an emergency recall from the ECHL to fill the void. [The 6th Sens]
  • Ah, yes, but “The Hamburglar” Andrew Hammond keeps stealing victories for the Senators with his stellar play. His victories and his nickname propping up a promotional character has earned Hammond lifetime freebies at Mickey D’s. [Ottawa Sun]
  • Did I say things were grim with the Senators in goalie news? They keep winning in spite of challenges in the crease. 2-1 was the final last night over the Hurricanes. [Silver Seven Sens]
  • Did you think AHL upheaval was over after last week’s news about St. John going to Winnipeg and Hamilton going to St. John? You shouldn’t have, because shenanigans are still in play! In this case, the Florida Panthers may be leaving San Antonio in favor of Portland. [Press Herald]
  • Nail Yakupov, humanitarian philanthropist. You hear about athletes raising money for charity, this instance was much more direct. [Sprtsnet.ca]
  • It’s hard for me to characterize the Doug Wilson/Joe Thornton issue that is ongoing with the San Jose Sharks. Wilson played everything down during the GM meetings Tuesday. I’m skeptical this is the end of the drama between the two. [ESPN]
