Five Lightning prospects named to Team Canada for World Junior Championship

Fanpost: Disturbances in the force

The Bolts

I forgot that there is always a surge in Canadian media attention whenever the Bolts cross the border. The result is always a lovely slew of articles, though!

Scott Burnside of ESPN turned his attention to Jonathan Drouin, interviewing him and transcribing it so that Saima wouldn’t have to. “A year after demanding a trade, Lightning winger Jonathan Drouin says Tampa ‘feels like home'” [ESPN]

…While Pierre LeBrun focused on why Tampa Bay is hurting for goals right now. “The Stamkos injury aside, Tampa Bay’s slide is puzzling. This is a deep, talented lineup with a great coaching staff, a team that reached the Cup finals two years ago and fell one win short of a return trip last season.” [ESPN]

“Sophia Jurksztowicz explains the journey Alex Killorn took to the NHL, which included time at Harvard University.” [Sportsnet video]

“[Alan] Thicke’s passion had a big impact on hockey in Tampa Bay. Longtime Lightning fans will remember that Thicke was the master of ceremonies for the Lightning’s first-ever game at Expo Hall in 1992.” [Tampa Bay Times]

There are never too many stories about a victory. “Brian Boyle nets pair of goals as Tampa Bay Lightning snap Calgary Flames’ six-game streak with 6-3 win.” [National Post]

So who was it that inspired the Bolts to victory? Joe speculates it was Vladdy. “Did Vladislav Namestnikov put the fight back into the Bolts?” [Tampa Bay Times]

Drouin thinks so too:

At some point today, friends of mine at Pension Plan Puppets started spitballing about signing Brian Boyle when he becomes a UFA this summer. Erik Erlendsson must’ve anticipated the chatter, because he interviewed Boyle about exactly this. “Renaissance Man Brian Boyle hopes to remain with Lightning next year” [Lightning Insider]

This is neat, from yesterday:

The League

This is lovely, despite the Panthers’ crazy season. “Jaromir Jagr poised to pass Mark Messier on NHL points list.” [Associated Press]

And here’s Messier’s reaction. [NBC Sports]

Amalie Benjamin, who used to just write about the Bruins and who now writes for NHL.com, wrote about “Road to the NHL Outdoor Classics” — you know, the outdoor game thing that Florida teams will never get to do because they aren’t Original Six. Anyway, it sounds interesting. “Dreams come true in first episode of EPIX series” [NHL.com]

Hasn’t this answer been “yes” for the past decade? “Are Oilers Risking Asset Mismanagement?” [THW]

“It wasn’t easy, but should it be easy to win 10 games in a row? The Philadelphia Flyers did exactly that after holding on against the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Wednesday night.” [NBC Sports]

Marek vs. Wyshinski talked to the most epic player of last season: John Scott. [Puck Daddy]

“Auston Matthews ready to play against boyhood idol.” D’aw. [NHL.com]

WJC

“Without an obvious star player to carry the pressure and expectations, Canada’s team for the world junior hockey championship will be all about teamwork, speed and desire.” Canada’s junior team preaches ‘teamwork’ in absence of stars. [CBC]

Taylor Raddysh has some natural chemistry with his Team Canada teammates, dating all the way back to their days in minor league hockey.  “Me and my roommate, [Michael] McLeod, we kind of gave each other a big hug in excitement. It was a cool feeling for us. We were teammates when we were younger.” [TSN]

Here’s Mitchell Stephens with visual evidence that their minor league team was stacked with some serious talent.
