Quick Strikes: Lightning assign players to Syracuse, lose another preseason game in overtime

The Bolts

Unfortunately the Tampa Bay Lightning couldn’t keep their luck going from Friday’s victory and lost their second game to the Nashville Predators on Saturday night. Pat Maroon made his debut and Alex Volkov, after scoring a goal in the previous game, got a chance to play on the first line.

Carter Verhaeghe and Cameron Gaunce had a multipoint night: Verhaeghe scored two goals, while Gaunce scored and added an assist on a Erik Cernak’s goal.

Danick Martel got in a fight with Predators forward Yakov Trenin in the second period. Both players were given game misconducts.

Eventually the game was decided in the overtime, with Rem Pitlick scoring the winning goal for the Predators. The Lightning face the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

-Nolan and Cal Foote played another game together. Nolan Foote assisted on the second Verhaeghe goal.

-The Tampa Bay Lightning announced new cuts to their training camp roster. 14 players have been released and three players were placed on waivers. Check the following article to see the full list of players and read thoughts on some of them. [Raw Charge]

Peter Abbandonato – Abbandonato is on an AHL contract so he wasn’t going to make the team unless the Lightning signed him to an entry level contract. He did not play in any pre-season games.

Jimmy Huntington – Huntington played in two pre-season games for the Lightning, which was a little bit of a surprise to me as he is a professional rookie. He was signed to an entry level contract late last season while he was playing an overage junior season. He caught my eye during last night’s game at time and I expect him to fit in well with the Crunch.

-As was expected, Louis Domingue and Mike Condon have cleared waivers and have been assigned to the Syracuse Crunch. Per Julien BriseBois, the Lightning are still planning to find a new team for Domingue, but it’s a little bit more complicated than expected.

-The team has also placed three more players on waivers, including Cory Conacher.

-The rock band Disturbed visited Amalie Arena during the last Lightning home game:

The Crunch

-Kevin Lynch, released from his PTO with the Lightning, has signed an AHL PTO and will join the Crunch’s training camp.

-The Crunchman joined the 2019 Teal Ribbon Run on a Saturday morning.

The Game

-The Winnipeg Jets suspended defenceman Dustin Byfuglien for refusing to report to camp. The move doesn’t signal any animosity between the Jets and their star defender. It’s just bookkeeping that allows them to remove his cap hit until he makes a decision about whether he wants to retire.

But when it comes to professional women’s hockey, the sport is at a crossroads. Despite growth last season, the Canadian Women’s Hockey League made the stunning decision to fold in May citing an “economically unsustainable business model.” That left the rival National Women’s Hockey League as the only remaining professional league in North America. While the NWHL also reported record attendance and viewership last season (its fourth), Coyne Schofield and many other top stars decided not to play in that league — or any pro league — this fall.

“When the doctor said, ‘Absolutely, you’re going to be fine,’ it was, ‘OK, good. Let’s deal with it,’’ Kunin said. “Fortunately, we caught it early. I mean, I knew nothing. I didn’t know what diabetes was ‘til I was diagnosed. I was pretty young, so it made me a little nervous that my mom was crying, and as a parent, you never want to hear any news like that about your child.

-A new website about hockey prospects is launching today.

-PK Subban is feeling great in New Jersey.

-Former seventh-round Lightning pick Nikita Gusev is adapting well to a new team.

-Mats Zuccarello scored his first preseason goal for the Wild.
