Tampa Bay Lightning 2023-24 Milestones

A very sweaty Steven Stamkos smiles at the camera while holding up his 1000th point puck.

Before every season, I like to take a look at the milestones that players are approaching. Sometimes it’s a little underwhelming, but other times we’ll see big milestones on the horizon for a player. We like the big round numbers, so we’ll be focusing on increments of 100 for both career milestones and milestones within the organization. We’ll also look at some franchise leader board changes in the top ten that we could see this upcoming season. I’ll be using some of my own intuition about how much a player is likely to score and if they have a chance. Something like Games Played is a little more straight forward, barring injuries.

Franchise Leaderboards

Games Played

Stamkos only needs 34 games to tie Vincent Lecavalier for most games played by a Lightning player. Victor Hedman can also pass Lecavalier with 64 games played this season. Nikita Kucherov is 28 games behind Pavel Kubina for 6th most. Brayden Point is also poised to enter the top 10 as he needs 53 games to tie Brad Richards for 10th. Mikhail Sergachev with a full season will find his way to 12th most all-time, but will need another season to move into the top 10 overall.

On the defensemen leaderboard, Sergachev just needs 63 games to tie Cory Sarich for 3rd most games played. Erik Cernak is also in position to move up from 13th to as high as 7th if he plays all 82 games, surpassing Andrej Sustr (333), Nola Pratt (334), Cory Cross (336), Braydon Coburn (350), Anton Stralman (355), and Roman Hamrlik (377).

Goals

Victor Hedman is currently tied with Ondrej Palat at 143 goals for 10th place on the franchise leaderboard. Stamkos, Kucherov, and Point are the only other players currently in the top ten. Stamkos is already atop the board and the other two are 4th and 5th, with Kucherov trailing Martin St. Louis by 89 goals and Point trailing Kucherov by 58 goals. Anthony Cirelli is the next active Lightning player on the list at 19th with 77 goals. While he will move up this season and could get into the top 15, he’s currently 66 goals behind Palat and Hedman for 10th.

On the defensemen leaderboard, Sergachev needs just 6 goals to tie with Roman Hamrlik’s 52 goals for 4th all-time. He would need 20 to tie Dan Boyle for 3rd most and 26 to tie Pavel Kubina for 2nd. Those last two are unlikely to happen this season, but should happen in the next few. Cernak sits at 10th with 18 goals and can look to surpass Ryan McDonagh (20), Filip Kuba (21), and Shawn Chambers (23) this season.

Assists

Stamkos currently trails Martin St. Louis by 47 assists for the top spot and has a very good chance of passing his former line mate this season. Kucherov is 38 assists behind Vincent Lecavalier for 4th and is highly likely to surpass him this season. He would need to have 66 more assists than Victor Hedman this season to pass him for 3rd on the leaderboard. Kucherov will surpass Hedman at some point, but this season is unlikely, but not impossible. Brayden Point sits at 245 assists in 9th place. He is 23 assists behind Alex Killorn and 45 assists behind Ondrej Palat, so moving up to 8th is likely and 7th is possible. Mikhail Sergachev is knocking on the door for the top 10. He only needs 8 more assists to tie Tyler Johnson for 11th, but is sitting 52 assists behind Vinny Prospal for the 10 spot.

On the defensemen leaderboard, Cernak needs 11 assists to tie Matt Carle for 10th.

Points

Stamkos already holds the top spot on this list. Nikita Kucherov would need to have a record shattering season to move up as he trails Vincent Lecavalier by 145 points for 3rd place. Brayden Point is poised to move up two spots from 8th to 6th this season with fair ease. He trails Alex Killorn in 7th by only 3 points and Brad Richards for 6th by 26 points. Victor Hedman is next in line at 652 points.

On the defensemen side, Sergachev is likely to move into 2nd from 4th this season. He sits at 238 career points with the team and is looking up at Pavel Kubina in 3rd with 243 points and Dan Boyle in 2nd with 253 points. Then it’s a huge mountain of a Swede in front of him with 652 points and climbing. Cernak needs 10 points to tie Cory Sarich for 10th and 12 points to tie Shawn Chambers for 9th. If he has a strong offensive season, he could potentially tie Paul Ranger for 8th with 17 points and Ryan McDonagh for 7th with 24 points this season.

Goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy already holds all of the Lightning’s counting stat records except for two. No Lightning goaltender has ever scored a goal… so he could always take that one for himself. He’s also 3rd on the PIMs leaderboard with 32. Dan Cloutier occupies the spot ahead of him with 33 and Mike Smith is atop the leaderboard with a whopping 45 PIMs. It’ll only take one minor penalty for him to move into 2nd and I’d say that is likely to happen, but not guaranteed as he made it through last season as well as 2020-21 without taking a penalty. His career high though is 14 in 2017-18, mostly due to a Misconduct he was given at the end of a game that he lost in OT. So it’s unlikely he’ll surpass Mike Smith… but not impossible this season.
