The Tampa Bay Lightning announced today that they have signed forward Ryan Lohin to a two-year entry-level contract. Lohin was a seventh-round draft pick, 208th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2016. He was an overage draft pick after showing well in the USHL with the Madison Capitols and Waterloo Black Hawks in 2015-16.

Lohin just wrapped up his junior season with UMass-Lowell. Over three seasons of NCAA hockey, he averaged 27 points per season and scored at a 0.74 PPG pace with 81 points in 110 games. Lohin has good size for a forward prospect at 6’0” and 195 pounds. He is a left-handed center, but could also play left wing as a professional. I recently wrote about the Lightning’s unsigned prospects and gave Lohin a 50/50 chance of signing because he still had another year of NCAA eligibility.
Lohin will turn 23 years old at the end of June, which is why his entry-level contract is only for two years. It won’t start until next season and he has signed an Amateur Try Out Contract with the Syracuse Crunch so that he may practice and potentially play for the Crunch as they continue their push into the playoffs.
The Crunch are already crowded up front, and will get even more so with Kevin Lynch and Daniel Walcott recently starting to skate, making comebacks from injury. Lohin should still at least make a couple of appearances before the end of the season and will provide some depth for the Crunch in case of injuries.

Lohin’s chances of making it to the NHL are still a bit long. He will need to continue his development and show off his offensive skills in the AHL as well as continue to hone the defensive end of his game. He has good hands, vision, and hockey IQ though and that should serve him well towards his goal of making it to the NHL.
Randomly, according to his bio on the UMass-Lowell web site, Lohin also plays golf and tennis. His favorite TV shows include Impractical Jokers, White Collar, and Suits. The Philadelphia Flyers, Eagles, and Phillies are his favorite professional sports teams as he was born and raised outside of Philadelphia.
For those interested in what numbers he has worn in the past and what he might wear in the future, Lohin has been wearing #18 for UMass-Lowell. He also wore #18 with Waterloo in the USHL. Prior to that, he wore #2 with the Madison Capitols in the USHL and with Team Comcast U18 in Midget hockey. #18 is currently claimed by Taylor Raddysh with the Crunch and Ondrej Palat with the Lightning. However, #2 is available on both teams so we could see a switch back to that number for him.
Overall, this is more good forward depth for the Lightning and he could be valuable to the Crunch as soon as next year with multiple players looking to make the jump next year in camp.
