World Championships: USA versus Denmark

The US lost to Denmark in overtime 2-1.

The US outshot the Danes 31-29. TJ Oshie had five shots on goal, while David Moss and Kyle Okposo had four shots each. Scott Clemmensen was in net for the Americans and faced 17 shots in the second period alone. The US also took one fewer penalty than Denmark as well, but each team scored a power play goal. Keith Yandle scored the only US goal.

The US is now 0-2 in the preliminary round of the World Championships, having lost to Germany in the opening game of the tournament. However, Finland had also lost to Denmark 4-1 last Saturday. If the US loses to Finland on Wednesday, 12 May, then they will be out of medal contention and go into the relegation round.

There are four groups, with four nations each. The top three countries in each group after the preliminary round is complete will go on to play for a medal. If the US manages to squeak into the elimination round, then they’ll play against the top three of Group A, which includes Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Slovakia.

What the relegation round means is that two of the four teams would be invited back to the 2011 tournament. They play a round robin to determine seeding.  The last two teams will play in Division II.
