Lightning Round: Hugo Shutout in blowout Crunch win

Syracuse Crunch goalie Hugo Alnefelt (60) makes a save against Cleveland Monsters Trey Fix-Wolansky (64) in American Hockey League (AHL) action at the Upstate Medical University Arena in Syracuse, New York on Saturday, October 29, 2022. Cleveland won 4-2.

Friday night was pretty much perfect for the Syracuse Crunch, who ran the Cleveland Monsters out of their own building with a 5-0 shutout win. Hugo Alnefelt stopped all 35 shots he faced for his second win of the young season.

The Crunch had five different goal scorers on the night. Gabriel Dumont, Felix Robert, Daniel Walcott, Cole Koepke, and Maxim Groshev to round it off. Both Dumont and Sean Day walked away with two points in the team effort. Four players had four shots for the Crunch in the game, including Robert, Groshev, Declan Carlile (no surprise), and Mitchell Chaffee. Dumont completed the Gordie Howe Hat Trick with a goal, assist, and a fight.

I mentioned Carlile as not a surprise for four shots because in the highlights I watched on AHLtv he was aggressive on the rush, joining the play as the fourth attacker and using his forward instincts to make the most of rush chances. I would really like to do a shot location study on Carlile whether his shot locations are closer to the net than most defenders. He just seems to put himself in much better places to shoot with his anticipation than most defenders can do. He really is a fourth forward out there at times.

Enough about Carlile, whom you can obviously tell I like as a prospect. Here are the goal highlights. There’s also a big Hugo-mungous save in the bunch.

Justin wrote a feature for the For Hockey Fans network site on the Lightning’s additions and how they’re doing really early into the season. Give it a read!

Someone to keep an eye on at 2pm tomorrow. I’ve liked Liam Foudy in the past and just looks like he needs a fresh start. He doesn’t get enough opportunities to play in CBJ.

I’m glad Twitter cards still show the headline when embedded on our site. They haven’t broken it fully yet. Regarding the actual news, the Coyotes are hoping to try again for a new arena. their last proposal for a publicly funded private arena was voted down by Tempe city council.

And speaking of Twitter, it’s becoming a less reliable sports news site for casual and more invested fans. Not great. [Ed. Note – we have a few Bluesky invite codes. Leave a comment if you’re interested and we will try to get them to you – Justin]

Circling back to the Cleveland Monsters, they’ve secured an extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets for the long term. This is all happening while the Carolina Hurricanes are desperate to purchase an affiliate team — the Chicago Wolves are the only non-affiliated team and they don’t want to be affiliated with anyone. The Canes have a loan agreement with the Syracuse Crunch, hence why you’ll see some of their prospects there on occasion.
